What’s Covered in 3rd Grade Math

  • Students calculate the total seed packets needed for planting by using multiplication as repeated addition and division to allocate the seeds among different planting zones.

Learning Summary: Students learn the basics of multiplication and division through visual and practical applications.

    1. Understanding multiplication as repeated addition.

    2. Understanding division as partitioning or sharing equally.

    3. Using arrays and grouping to visualize multiplication and division concepts.

    4. Solving simple multiplication and division problems.

  • To optimize space utilization, students apply the properties of multiplication to plan the layout of the bio-dome’s planting sections.

Learning Summary: This class focuses on understanding and applying the commutative, associative, and distributive properties of multiplication.

    1. Applying the commutative property of multiplication (changing the order of numbers in a multiplication sentence doesn't change the product).

    2. Applying the associative property of multiplication (changing the grouping of numbers being multiplied doesn't change the product).

    3. Applying the distributive property of multiplication over addition (distributing multiplication over addition to simplify problems).

    4. Recognizing and using different properties to simplify calculations and understand multiplication more deeply.

  • Students calculate resource allocations across various systems, using efficient multiplication and division strategies.

Learning Summary: Students practice fluent multiplication and division within 100, using strategies to enhance speed and accuracy.

    1. Fluently multiplying and dividing numbers within 100.

    2. Using known multiplication facts to derive other facts (e.g., using 6×6 to find 6×7).

    3. Developing strategies for mental multiplication and division.

    4. Reinforcing the relationship between multiplication and division.

  • A glitch shows wrong resource stats; students use all four operations in a challenge to fix the system.

Learning Summary: Students solve multi-step word problems using all four operations, developing strategies for practical application and reasoning.

    1. Solving multi-step word problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

    2. Interpreting complex problems and planning an approach using appropriate operations.

    3. Using equations with a variable to represent problems.

    4. Assessing the reasonableness of answers using mental math and estimation strategies.

  • To ensure the Orbital Space Farm orbits correctly, students use their place value and rounding skills to calculate the navigation coordinates.

Learning Summary: The class covers the use of place value in performing and checking operations with multi-digit numbers, including rounding.

    1. Understanding and using place value for multi-digit numbers.

    2. Performing multi-digit addition and subtraction based on place value.

    3. Rounding whole numbers to the nearest ten or hundred.

    4. Using place value understanding to simplify computations.

  • Students partition the farm into zones using fractions, ensuring each crop type has the optimal space for growth.

Learning Summary: Students explore basic concepts of fractions, including their representation on number lines and as parts of whole objects.

    1. Understanding fractions as numbers and parts of a whole.

    2. Placing fractions on a number line.

    3. Comparing and explaining the equivalence of fractions.

    4. Using fractions in the context of division (e.g., dividing a shape into equal parts).

  • Amid a busy harvest season, students measure and record crop yields, then use graphs to predict future resource needs.

Learning Summary: This class teaches estimation and measurement of time, volume, and mass, along with data interpretation through graphs.

    1. Estimating and measuring time, liquid volumes, and masses using standard units.

    2. Solving real-world problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals.

    3. Interpreting and constructing bar graphs and picture graphs to represent data.

    4. Understanding and using measurement data to solve problems.

  • As part of the expansion phase, students calculate the area and perimeter of new planting areas to ensure an optimal layout.

Learning Summary: Students learn to calculate the area and perimeter of various shapes, using these concepts in a real-world context.

    1. Understanding area as an attribute of shapes.

    2. Measuring areas by counting unit squares.

    3. Relating area to the operations of multiplication and addition.

    4. Solving real-world problems involving perimeters of polygons.

    5. Understanding the relationship between perimeter and area.

  • To prepare for visitors, students redesign a portion of the farm, using their knowledge of geometry to create both functional and visually appealing crop arrangements.

Learning Summary: The focus is on recognizing and reasoning about the properties of different geometric shapes and their categorization.

    1. Understanding and identifying properties of shapes (e.g., quadrilaterals).

    2. Reasoning with shapes and their attributes to categorize them.

    3. Shapes are partitioned into equal areas; each part is described using fractions.

    4. Drawing shapes that meet specific criteria (e.g., having three sides).

  • The grand opening of the Orbital Space Farm is at hand, and students use their cumulative math knowledge to ensure all systems are optimized for the celebration, demonstrating their learning through a series of challenges.

Learning Summary: This final class reviews all concepts covered, applying them through comprehensive assessment.

Common Questions

  • The course is completely virtual.

Our live classes are on Zoom with one teacher and a maximum of six students.

The rest of the course is tracked and takes place on this website between live classes. Students will learn from video lessons, guided hands-on activities, printout worksheets, and parent discussions.

  • Tappity safeguards all Zoom sessions with password protection, guaranteeing exclusive access for teachers and students. Furthermore, our meetings are designed for instructor control, empowering teachers—rather than students—with authority over classroom entry and fundamental functionalities like screen sharing and audio/video. This ensures teachers can promptly address any issues that may arise during classes.

  • We do not currently at this time but we hope to offer it in the future.
